Podcast Summary:

When John Quinney was ten years old, he took the stand to testify against his father. He had come to believe that his dad Melvin was the murderous leader of a satanic cult. It would be decades before John would learn that his family was just one of many swept up in a panic that gripped America in the 1980s—one in which hundreds of people were accused of taking part in underground satanic cults that sacrificed infants and sexually abused children. By the time the panic had subsided, scores of people were in prison, convicted on little to no evidence—people like John’s father.

Heather’s Review:

This story captured my attention almost immediately. It’s shocking and disappointing and, like many others, brings to light the injustice that happens when law enforcement creates a new problem vs. investigating one that already exists. Unfortunately, I found myself zoning out a lot while listening to this podcast. To be fair, I was multi-tasking, so it wasn’t boring; I just couldn’t concentrate fully on it. Overall, it was well told and featured some of those affected by the investigation.

I give Conviction: American Panic 3.5 out of 5 stars.
