Podcast Summary:

Alex Johnson had it all. He was brilliant, an avid outdoorsman, a talented chef, artist, and botanist with friends worldwide. In 2013, days shy of his 33rd birthday, Johnson vanished after wrapping up a phone call with his girlfriend.

The Johnson family did everything for more than a month to try and find him. They held vigils, organized searches, brought specialized K-9, and put up billboards.

But Alex was dead. Beaten in the back of a Mercedes Benz, his body put in a barrel and rolled into a frigid Kentucky river. And one of his best friends named the prime suspect.

Heather’s Review:

This podcast took me by surprise. A reporter hosts it, so it’s almost like listening to a news report vs. a podcast. Once I got used to that, I was quickly sucked into the story of Alex Johnson. This is not the typical investigative podcast. They get into who did it pretty early on. There were a couple of times that I thought I was listening to the same thing for a second time, though I’m not 100% sure if I accidentally hit the rewind button or if they play the same audio from the trial more than once. I appreciate how much they focused on the victim and his family vs. many podcasts focusing more on the murderer.

I give Taking Alex 4 out of 5 stars.
