Mommy Dead and Dearest on HBO Max
Genre: Documentary, True Crime
Things are not always as they appear, especially in the case of Dee Dee and Gypsy Rose Blanchard. This true-crime documentary follows a bizarre case involving one of psychology’s most controversial conditions–Munchausen by proxy syndrome–a treacherous web of lies, child abuse, mental illness, and forbidden love is entangled in a provocative fashion.
When I heard about this story, I was intrigued to learn everything I could about it. I have watched this documentary at least five times, and each time I noticed something new that I missed before. This story is sad, and if you haven’t heard it, I highly recommend starting with this documentary. You get just a glance at how Gypsy ended up where she did and why.
I give The Mommy Dead and Dearest on Netflix 4.5 out of 5 stars.
