Summary:

Travis Bickle is an ex-Marine and Vietnam War veteran living in New York City. As he suffers from insomnia, he spends his time working as a taxi driver at night, watching porn movies at seedy cinemas during the day, or thinking about how New York’s world has deteriorated into a cesspool. He’s a loner with strong opinions about what is right and wrong with mankind.

For him, the one bright spot in New York humanity is Betsy, a worker on the presidential nomination campaign of Senator Charles Palantine. He becomes obsessed with her. After an incident with her, he believes he has to do whatever he needs to make the world a better place, in his opinion.

One of his priorities is to be the savior for Iris, a twelve-year-old runaway and prostitute who he believes wants out of the profession and under the thumb of her pimp and lover, Matthew.

Cast:

Robert De Niro, Jodie Foster, and Cybill Shepherd

Filip’s Review:

This story is about a man with a life worth nothing who risks and helps another person.

First, the movie is worth attention to because it was a small inspiration for the well-known “Joker.” Of course, these aren’t very similar movies but with a similar core.

For me, the taxi driver is a better “Joker.” A film based practically on nothing turns into something so wonderful. The film shows what a broken and damaged man can do.

The protagonist feels unpunished and does terrible things. He starts by being a simple taxi driver and becomes a murderer. Who, however, helps someone, but only in his head. A sensational transformation.

And, of course, Robert De Niro is simply brilliant! Credit must also give credit to the young Jodie Foster and her Oscar. The film also features very atmospheric music. Practically the same all the time. The last fight scene was average for me, but it’s a very old movie, so I understand weaker quality.

I recommend it to everyone. A film worth watching. Great movie!

I give Taxi Driver on Netflix 5 out of 5 stars.
